Located in Ban Lao, Muang Kai Subdistrict, Mae Taeng District, Chiang Mai, this area is home to an Assam tea plantation with a rich and long-standing history. The plantation includes tea trees over 100 years old, and local wisdom surrounding traditional tea-making practices has been passed through generations to the present day.
In the past, local farmers processed tea into “Miang” (fermented tea leaves) and carried it on their backs to sold in the main town of Mae Taeng or neighboring districts. This caused the old saying:
"Trading Miang for Rice,"
which reflects how villagers relied on bartering tea leaves for rice, because the mountainous terrain of Mon Ngo lacked flat land suitable for rice farming.
This area holds not only economic significance but also be a valuable local learning center preserving ancestral knowledge. Traditional tea products from the area include:
Miang (fermented tea leaves)
White tea
Gaba tea
Black tea, Green tea
Tea leaf salad (Yam Bai Cha)
Fried tea leaves, and more.
In order to enhance the community’s potential to generate income through eco-cultural tourism, there are an efforts establishing the Mon Ngo Tea Learning Center and Tourist Service Point. This center serves as a destination for study tours, sharing knowledge about tea cultivation and processing. The center also functions as a tea and coffee café, tourist rest stop, and community product retail space, helping to boost the local economy and add value to regional products.
